Iran’s President Says Nuke Deal Possible Before Deadline

Iran’s President Hassan Rohani has said that Tehran and world powers may still be able to reach a deal on the country’s controversial nuclear program before the November 24 deadline.

Rohani, speaking on national television on October 13, said Iran has the “political will” to reach the deal with the six nation group — the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany — although significant differences remain that require negotiations.

Rohani’s remarks somewhat contrasted those of senior Iranian nuclear negotiator, Abbas Araghchi, who said last week the talks could be extended.

The talks were already extended once earlier this year.

They reportedly remain deadlocked over the size and output of Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

Negotiators will meet for another round of talks in Vienna later this week.

The West wants Iran to scale down nuclear activities, such as uranium enrichment, so that it cannot produce nuclear weapons.

Iran denies trying to develop such weapons.
